Black Snake Experiment | Lab Report

What is Carbon?

The Significance of Carbon. A compound found mainly in living things is known as an organic compound. Organic compounds make up the cells and other structures of organisms and carry out life processes. Carbon is the main element in organic compounds, so carbon is essential to life on Earth

The true method of learning is always an experiment which is a procedure when you learn anything with implementation. There are thousands of physical science experiment done by the scientist or students. One of the experiments I have done with my teacher and classmate in round 3 of these years is the carbon black snake experiment. To demonstrate with a clear explanation of how carbon black snake experiment work, we will walk through it clearly:

First, we have a bowl of sand to give protection when we are working with fire. Then place sugar and baking soda as a small volcano in the middle. After that soak everything wet with Ethanol(Simply known as alcohol). Lastly, set it on fire with matches.

After following all of those instructions you begin to see what look like a black snake push through sugar and baking soda,

Explanation

To set the ingredients on fire, the heat break bond between sodium in baking soda and carbon in the sugar. The black snake you are viewing is called “Carbon ash”. You may be wondering why the carbon ash is pushing through the sugar and baking soda while not just settle like typical carbon ash. It is just because of the carbon dioxide released into the air from the burning carbon that pushes those ash to grow up into the sky. The color of the snake due to the sugar being burned by the heat because after burning carbon always turn to black and release carbon dioxide.

Afterward, this particular experiment is giving more detail, knowledge, and experience about carbon to you. It includes how carbon bonded with sodium by heat and the carbon ash pushes up by carbon dioxide. You can test this experiment with the following instructions and ingredients.

Why python is easy?

Python is considered to be one of the easiest programming languages among others but the word easiest doesn’t define it as easy. It can be described as more direct words and less syntax compare to other programming languages. In the first week of the third round in Technology and Multimedia essentials, We learn about basic python such as syntax white space, variable, operation, if, else, if, while loop, for loop, etc. I created a poster to summarize and the slide presentation by our teacher to teach us in our class.

My Name in my perspective

To me, a name is one meaningful word or words given by our parent or relative to define us all as a person for every single day. When I woke up from my bed soft as a cloud, the first word I would hear before anyone starts the sentence it is always my name. When I shared my story or met new people in my life I’ve never forgotten to introduce my name first. For all these days after I was named in a young age, I would hear this sweetest word the most.

I hold dear for my precious name.

My name is Bopha which means flower in Khmer language. Tons of the type of flowers bloom and fade just as my mood or luck that changes. The smell and shade of color in each flower show me there is always potential in me but not everyone could see it. Even some people hurt me by cutting the root of flower but none of them can cut spring from coming to let me have the chance to shine again. Another meaning can be the metaphor of the word beautiful or good ladies.

Despite all of the deep meaning hidden inside, not everything about my first name is perfect. Most of the foreigner always pronounce my name wrong which made me kind of sad for telling people your name and they can forget it easily. Sometimes I laugh a little bit not to make myself too negative when they say it. With all of the effort to control my emotion, I am now getting used to it. One funny moment sometimes I felt like watching comedy is when I listen to Khmer song. Some of those songs contain my name represent beautiful lady that makes it seems like I am the main lady in the songs.

I love my name as the most adorable treasure I own. Unfortunately, I love my middle name more. “I did ask u when you were young and you choose Bopha over Morokot. I was afraid that you don’t like the name and I wait for you to grow but your name right now is just what you choose ” My mom would say whenever I said I kind of want to change my first name to my middle name instead. My middle name means a green gem which can bring light to all the darkness around it. It is rare and unique in its own way. The value and green light added the taste of delightful path for me. It shows me that before I can shine to be bright as that type of gem I needed to put thousand of effort and processes. My grandparent chose the name for me. My grandfather wanted my name to be “Bopha” while my grandmother wanted my name to be “Morokot”. My mother didn’t put it in my birth certificate until I was one and a half.

After I grew up and become teenage I think that I am very attached to my name. Even though, when I compare my middle name and my first name people usually say that my Morokot middle name is better but I would still prefer to be a flower that pushes through dirt to be a positive and delightful person. My heart, my personality, my life is already attached to my name for a long way with so many great memories I could remember. Now, I don’t want to change my name anymore but I would still prefer to have the long name with my gemstone middle name MOROKOT!.

Uses and importance of fraction in our daily life

Math is known to be one of the most important subjects in the world. It can involve or relate to our world and our life in different ways. Fraction as a part of this important subject is also crucial for our daily life. Without examples, you may still wonder or want to more so I have come up with some examples.

Imagine you are going to your grocery store with 200$. Due to your luck or special celebration, the store makes a special discount with 25 percent off the price in your spending. You may need to think of how much would you have to spend with the discount using a fraction.

It’s your friend’s birthday party and you would want to try and bake a beautiful cake to make that day even more beautiful. Can you picture wouldn’t it be bad without measuring your ingredients to bake the precious cake? Using fraction you will know how much of an ingredient you might need in a cup or spoon. After measuring and leave your cake in one of those baking stoves the decorations are ready for the birthday party.

Time is important in every single person’s life. With studying, working, family trip, hanging out with a friend or your own time you should manage your time wisely with a daily schedule. In the absence of fraction, it wouldn’t be as organized. Now let’s get make the schedule for your homework on weekend. From 6 o’clock to 7 o’clock half of ½ the hour you will spend on finishing your math homework. Another quarter of an hour which is from 6:30 to 7:30  you will spend on your computer science assignment. ½ of an hour or quarter of an hour using this method which is exactly fraction help you to organize and divide your time into section wisely.

Ratio and comparison

Ratio

Imagine you want to compare the number of girls and boys in your math class. Example The students who are girls is 88 students and the boys are 80 students. When you write in ratio it should be 88:80. The reading form is 88 to 80. It could be simplified to 11 : 10. By using ration and simplified the number ratio play a really useful way of comparing the number of girl and boys students in the class to see the difference quickly. It is also similar to the fraction with the way we simplified them. The order of the ratio given in the exercise or form in words is also very important.

Example: Find the ratio of pineapple to strawberry. As you can see in the picture there are 6 strawberries and 4 pineapples. The correct answer would be 4 : 6 because the exercise or problem are asking you to arrange the ratio of pineapple to strawberry.

Chemical Bonding | STEM

Chemical Bonding is the force of attraction between atoms and ion. It occurs when atoms happen to be transferring valence electrons which are electrons in the outer energy Level of an atom. Atoms are held together by Chemical Bonding. By sharing the electron, Atom has the ability to stay stable. Chemical Compound is composed or created of two or more separate elements. (H2O) Is an example of a chemical compound. They consist of ration fixed which is 2:1. (2;1) represents the two hydrogens that share electrons to oxygen. Furthermore, There are different types of bonding such as Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding.

Ionic Bonding is the force attraction that can hold together the positive and negative ions. It exists when a metallic element gives up the electron to an atom of nonmetal element.  When this happens, the atoms become oppositely charged ions. As an example, sodium(Na) atom donate one electron to the atom of chlorine(Cl). Now, these two elements have equal but opposite charge. As a result, they cling together by a strong ionic bond. Ionic bond forms only between metal and nonmetal elements. You can remember Ionic bonding very easily by thinking that metal wants to give up electron and nonmetal want to gain.

Covalent bonding is the force of attraction that holds together a pair of electron. The bond is formed because they want to share together to become more stable. In some cases, electrons are not shared equally between the two atoms. This is called polar which is the condition when the electrons are not shared together equally. One of the examples is the polar covalent bonding of water. As a result, oxygen attracts more strongly than the hydrogen because they have attracts positively charged atom.

Changing Cambodia (2017-2018)

  • How do I think about change?

Doing a survey in your own brain about a change from observing you can literally do it everywhere. Whenever I am traveling somewhere. The clear glass of the car can reflect the light that is growing in the country as well as the darkness of it.  I can see how has Cambodia country work in a different way from other country develop the country in the world. I can see through my eyes about the culture and economy in this country. Thinking is good but after I think I always tell myself to take action on it. It is not easy to make a change because it needs time. My school which is Liger Leader Academy has provided me with thinking about the change a lot because we always go outside to explore the reality. The reality makes our life more realistic with knowing things that are happening around us. With all of the major problems happening in the country, we as a part of humanity should participate to make our world a better place.

  • How did I try to promote and encourage change?

Sharation (Sharing and Exploration)

This is a photo in from one of the Sharation

This is a photo in from one of the Sharation on February 2018

Once every 7 weeks, all the students are given the opportunity to speak out and share the knowledge of the exploration they have worked on. People who are willing to gain knowledge are free to come and listen to the presentation on the sharation day. Throughout the event, I have the opportunity to present share and acknowledge the change and problem we’ve helped and discover within those explorations. Those include as Geography of Cambodia book, historical symbolism, disability podcast, entrepreneurship, the network play and many more.

In every one of the event, I was able to promote and encourages changes thorough speeches, presentation, podcast and more. Those events, help and remind both Khmer citizen and foreigner about the possibility of change to make Cambodian and the world a better country in many fields.

  • How did I raise awareness about change?

    Khmer MUN

On the 2nd of May 2018, the Liger Leadership Academy host an event called “Khmer MUN”. It was Model United Nations but it is in the Khmer language. As the Khmer language is our first language, we want to preserved and learn about how to use it in professional circumstances. It was an amazing opportunity to come together to research and share opinion by representing a different country about gender equality. The topic is about “Women can be leaders”. Furthermore, my team and I have created a resolution using different sources, claused to show all of the possibility to fight justice in order to allow women to be leaders. During the event, against and in favor team discussed the suitable solution for the topics. In the end, I was really grateful to be a part of supporting and encourage women to be leaders in different field especially in a government that is mostly dominated by men.

  • How Did I make the possibility of change?

    Technovation Cambodia

Technovation is a program offering girls opportunity learning about technology and entrepreneurship. They are challenged to identify a problem in their community, and then solved it by developing a mobile app solution. It is also a chance for us to compete in national and international competition by pitching our ideas to judges and summiting them through the website. I have participated in this program for 2 years (2017/2018).

Farmer market Application

A major problem in Cambodia is poverty. After the Khmer Rouge, economic and many other fields of this country was destroyed. As the destruction remain, many of its survivors sill struggle from the damage the regime has done. According to data of the workforce in 2016, 45% of Cambodia work in the agriculture field. The farmers don’t have markets to sell their agricultural products, such as vegetables and fruit which can lead to poverty. Our app is created for farmers to post their agricultural products such as vegetables and fruits and customers can access to view and buy the products.

MEP Center presented by Five Infinities

In 2018, I’ve joined the program again and form a team called “Five Infinities”. We develop an app called

MEP center which stands for Mechanical, Electricity, and Plumbing. It is created to allow customers to contact suppliers to fix their MEP problems and suppliers to find more customers to earn more profit.

It was a very successful competition and experience. One of the highlights is we went ICHING Decor company to present the idea of the app. The company said that the idea was fabulous and if we launch they will ensure to use it. It was a great time with the general manager of the company. We presented with the slide presentation and test the app with them. Most of the workers gave us some feedback to make our app better too.

On 20th May 2018 we have to compete among 11 teams in the national competition after we pass the mini-pitch competition. After the presentation judges were extremely happy about our idea. Shockingly, both of the mini-pitch and nation pitch, one of the judge have the same startup like us. This shows that our application can really help the problem because it does really exist in our society.

Eventually, with all of the teamwork, collaboration, time, we won the 1st place in the junior division of the national grand prize.

To sum up, this program is one of the solutions to gender equality in the technology field. By encouraging women to participate in this program, I am sure that they will discover a new part of societies and themselves. Before I start this program programming is my least favorite subject. During this two year journey, I’ve come to a point of enjoying coding and I was an app developer for both years. Now, I’ve tried to learn many new programming languages such as javascript, java,  HTML, CSS and python.

Basic photography course

“Each detail in a photo are captured to observe” this is my personal quote. Photography is one of my beloved subject in art. When I learn and explore more about photography it changes the way I look at the beauty of the world. Even I see a light bulb, sunset, mountain, birds, flower, leaf, those thing made me want to bring up a camera and captured a photo to see it again in the future. In my opinion, photography is like a  reversal moment to look back at after taking step forward. I am also thankful to my school for having new essential which is Technology and Multimedia.

In this round, We are focusing on multimedia and one of the course is photography basics.

There are two types of cameras have invented so far. They are DSLR(Digital Single Lens Reflex) and Mirrorless. The difference between the two cameras is how they captured the light for the photographer to see in the viewfinder. DSLR can be called optical viewfinder(OVF) because they have a mirror that allows light to go in and reflect in your viewfinder. On the other side, Mirrorless camera has an electronic viewfinder(EVF). It doesn’t have the mirror but they capture the light and relays it into your electronic viewfinder. You can also understand the two types of cameras but knowing that mirrorless camera uses electric for the viewfinder while DSLR doesn’t need to use any. There are slightly a lot of materials that create a photo

Exposure is the amount of light reaching the camera sensor. There are three things that affect the exposure. It consists of Shutter speed, Aperture, and ISO. Below is the picture of triangle exposure which allow you to understand how they affect the exposure.

Shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter open to allow the light in. The longer the shutter open is the more light that permit to be in the photo. They are measure in fraction of second(Ex: 1/100). They affect how motion is captured depending on situations such as sport, waterfall, shooting star and more. A very interesting type of photo created by shutter speed is Light Painting. If want to do the light painting photo you will need to set your Shutter speed to be very long to permit the light in. These are some example of the photo

Aperture is the size of len allowing the light to enter. It affect the depth in field(bluring) Just to keep in mind that the small the number is the bigger the size of len. The wider the temperature is the blurer it is. The wide aperture (i.e f/1.8) has shallow depth in field which mean it is good if you want to take picture of a subject with blurring background.Narrow aperture (i.e. f/11) has a deep depth of field it is good for landscapes/scenery.

ISO is how sensitive your camera to light. It can also represent how dark and bright is your photo too. If you increase ISO your photo will be bright and your Shutter will also increase. One of the advantage of increasing ISO is they create noise color. Noise color are small dots of color in your photo. It is best to keep ISO low only increase when aperture and shutter speed adjustments are not enough.

Lastly, We also studied some types of camera shots such as fong shot, full shot, medium shot, close-up, extreme close-up, low angles, high angles, eye level, dutch-angle/tilt, over the shoulder and birds eye view.

Interesting fact

A very interesting type of photo created by shutter speed is Light Painting. If you want to do the light painting photo you will need to adjust your Shutter speed to be very long to permit the light in. These are some example of the photo you can also give feedback for the photo you like the most. THANK YOU!

Environmental Justice| Research and Discussion

Environmental Justice as a given definition it means The fair treatment of people of all races, cultures, incomes and educational levels with respect to the development and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies. It is a breathtaking lesson to learn and explore. We have research on how the lack of fairness of Environmental Justice affects our world as a whole. Our teacher (Hannah) has given us the opportunity to research about how the pollution has affected the minority group in one of the smallest states in the United State which Connecticut. We have made a video to educate people and learn more about it. After, the discussion I wrote a reflection about how pollution has affected my community. This is the reflection:

Since I was born, I lived in Kampong Cham province. It is one among other provinces that have Mekong river crossing. We have three big market that is very busy. If you cross the big nearby market, You would have the possibility of smelling the trash from the food. On the road, There isn’t a lot of trash as much as the trash in Phnom Penh city.

Sources in my community of pollution exist from the vehicles. Near the Kizuna bridge in my community is not badly affected. As the matter of fact, Cambodian usually use this bridge to cross to another province, the highway on the bridge and near the bridge is kinda busy. Due to my observation, I can see that the people who are affected by pollution live near the busy near the big markets or busy high. There used to be a lot of trash in the province due to the big celebration. The provincial chief has worked on it by collaborating with the students or other people to pick up trash in kampong cham city.

In general, To secure environmental justice in my community people should use less vehicle to reduce pollution. If they are traveling in the province they may use bikes instead. As a matter, bike or walking can reduce noise pollution and air pollution. It would also help saving space for the road from parking the vehicles.

Another research is about impacts and injustice or living near the filthy waste dump.

There were four countries to do research such as India, Philipines, Ethiopia, and Kenya. I choose Ethiopia to be the countries to write the paragraph and answer question to think openly about the impacts.

Ethiopia is part of the continent of Africa with a population of 105 million. Trash dumps are everywhere in the city and outside the city. Some are buried over 50 years ago.  the recent year 2017, A tall massive trash dump, has collapsed and killed at least 114 people. Some of them are still Buried under the ground and the new became a world tragedy.  It is so horrible and ridiculous for the people to be killed by trash.

  • Taken on March 12, 2017 shows a view of Addis Ababa from the main landfill on the outskirts of the city,

According to world economic forum news, 1,400 tons of trash is wasted every. A big waste management in Ethiopia is turning trash to cash. By burning it down into power. In the community, there will be a tank and when it fills the government will empty it out. The dumped of landfills has affected the nearby river,  create methane and greenhouse gases. A project is started by Alemayehu with Chinese ivy partner CNEEC join the revolution of turning waste to energy. This energy plant is designed to solve waste problems. According to CNN news, They are burning 1.4 million kilograms of waste each day that light up 30 percents of the household. There are also landfill communities with massive trash mountain. That is not manipulating really well. It causes death over the past years. Koshe dump mean “Dirty” it is the biggest trash dump that people live there.
